Three Things You Should Know When Buying A New Furnace
What is AFUE rating?
AFUE or Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency is a standardized measure of fuel utilization of a furnace. It corresponds with how efficiently a furnace converts fuel to energy whether gas, propane or oil. The Department of Energy (DOE) requires a minimum of 80% AFUE. Higher efficiency units range between 90%-96% AFUE.
In simple terms, an 80% AFUE furnace converts 80% of fuel utilized to heat. So, out of every $100 spent towards heat, $80 is used and $20 goes out the flue.

What are stages?
There are three different technologies used in furnaces. Single-Stage, Two-Stage, and Variable Speed. The more stages the more heating capacities your fuel system can perform.
For example, a single-stage furnace always operates at 100% fuel capacity. Similar to a stove burner that is always on high. The more stages the more heating variables your system operates.
Multi-stage heating can substantially lower heating costs.

What is a variable speed blower?
The blower in the furnace is utilized both in the heating and cooling seasons. The blower is what moves the air through your home or office. A variable speed blower can ramp up or down according to need.
This feature can improve comfort and keep a more even temperature range. During the heating season it can also contribute to keeping a comfortable humidity level. Reducing dryness in your nose and throat when the heater is in use.
